Munising Public Schools' 2024 Salmon in the Classroom Fundraiser Please help our high school students purchase Scientific Equipment to conduct environmental water quality studies and support the continued rearing and release of salmon as well as the construction and deployment of fish cribs. There are two ways to donate: 1) Attend the Rotary Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, February 10th and 2) Donate directly at this link: https://payments.efundsforschools.com/fundraising/districts/56236/campaigns/Science The Natural Resources course is offered to students at the Munising Middle-High School and the science teacher (Hilary Ludecke) is working with the Rotary International Club of Munising, the Alger Conservation District (ACD), and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to raise chinook Salmon In The Classroom and release them into the Anna River. Last spring (2023), Mrs. Ludecke's students successfully reared and released over 20 young smolts into the river. Now in year two of this program, the Natural Resources class is preparing for another smolt release this spring and would like to continue expanding the curriculum and the partnership by engaging students in hands-on water quality studies of the local Lake Superior Watershed, including the Anna River and its tributaries. Additionally, the partnership will include working with the aforementioned organizations to build and place fish cribs and fish stix in local lakes, including Munising Bay, to provide secure habitats for various fish species. In order to conduct these hands-on studies of the watershed Mrs. Ludecke and the students in this course need to raise enough money to purchase a classroom set of Vernier probes and sensors, as well as related software to analyze the data collected. The fundraising goal for the sensors is $5000. In order to build the necessary fish structures as approved by the ACD and MDNR, they need to raise an additional $2500. Therefore reaching the collective goal of $7500 will enable the Natural Resources students to fund this two-pronged environmental studies project and ultimately inform the public and improve our local fisheries. This equipment will also have applications for our chemistry and biology students. The Munising Public Schools envisions this project based learning experience will inspire some of Munising's best and brightest students to pursue local careers in conservation and environmental science to safeguard and enhance the natural wonders of our region. Contact Natural Resources Teacher, Hilary Ludecke at hilary.ludecke@mps-up.com or Superintendent, Mike Travis at mike.travis@mps-up.com for more info.

MPS TRANSPORTATION UPDATE - MONDAY, JAN. 8, 2024 As a result of reducing to 3 runs for today, tomorrow, and Wednesday, the buses were running (late) behind the normal schedule by between 5 and 15 minutes at some stops. The stops at the beginning of the routes were mostly on time. However, due to an increased number of stops, those stops in the middle of the routes were 5-10 minutes behind, and those at the ends of each route may have been as much as 15 minutes behind. The drivers will do their best to improve this for tomorrow and Wednesday. Please know that any students that arrive to school late due to a late bus will be given amnesty. There will be no academic penalty or consequence as a result of tardiness to class due to a late bus. Unless otherwise communicated, we will be returning to 4 Bus Routes on Thursday, January 11th. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we struggle with a bus driver shortage. Please contact Bus Driver Coordinator, Rick Stephens for routing questions at rick.stephens@mps-up.com or at 906-450-4379. FROM JAN. 4 NOTICE: The adjustments to down to 3 routes are listed below: Bus 7 (Frog): Driver Rick Stevens will run his normal route, but will also be picking up the following portions of the Bus 10 (Dino) route - Connors Rd to Lehnen Rd; Lehnen Rd to Alger Hts.; The alley behind the Am. Legion. Bus 10 (Dino): Driver Terry Bower will continue portions of his normal route not mentioned above. He will also assume the Bus 3 (Bear) route starting on Percy Rd and continuing to Indiantown Rd, Carmody Rd, Hilltop Rd, Connors Rd to Miller Rd, and back to Cox Addition. Bus 9A (Camel): Driver Bill LeVeque will drive his normal route. There are no changes. For the dates of January 8, 9, and 10 there will be NO BUS SERVICE to Clear Lake, Powell Lake, and Sand Point.

IMPORTANT MPS TRANSPORTATION UPDATE - TUESDAY, JAN. 2, 2024 Beginning next week (January 8th) there will be some changes to our bus routing, including pick-up and drop-off times for at least a few days. More information with specific details will be shared later this week on Thursday or Friday. These changes are necessary because one of our drivers resigned on December 22nd and another one of our drivers just experienced a death in the family and will likely be out of state for several days next week. Our thoughts and prayer's are with her. The district is currently down to 4 regular route bus drivers and we currently operate 4 daily AM and PM bus runs. In the event that one of our 4 remaining bus drivers is ill or cannot drive for some other reason, it will result in changes to both pick-up and drop-off times and may mean that the district needs to temporarily suspend transportation to some families in town and nearest to the school buildings until we have at least 4 drivers. Bus transportation for athletic events will not be possible in some cases for the rest of this week and next due to temporary driver absence. Coaches and sports teams are using the two school passenger vans to assist in transporting student-athletes. If you have questions regarding availability of athletic transportation for specific events, please contact AD Lasak. We are currently exploring all routing options to alleviate the issues resulting from driver shortage, including the possibility of establishing some common multiple rider stops. We have a current employee who is striving to obtain his CDL license so we can hopefully add a driver to our ranks soon. We are also working very hard to find and attract drivers. If you are aware of anyone with the appropriate licensure or the willingness to obtain it at the district's expense, please have them contact Superintendent Travis at mike.travis@mps-up.com regarding part or full-time employment opportunities. Otherwise, general transportation questions can be directed to Bus Driver Coordinator, Rick Stephens at rick.stephens@mps-up.com.
